KARACHI: Appealing for the cooperation of the business community, the Standing Committee of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) on Law and Order has announced the launch of a campaign to boost the morale of police in the holy month of Ramzan.
Nadeem Khan, chairman of the committee, addressing a meeting held at the Federation House said that the campaign would begin in a few days by giving water bottles to on-duty police officials.
In the meeting, attended by DIG (Traffic) Asif Ejaz Shaikh, renowned industrialist SM Munir, FPCCI President Zubair Tufail and others, the chronic problem of traffic and law and order were discussed at length. The session was held for the first time at FPCCI with junior and senior police officers – including all Traffic SSPs, SPs, DSPs and section officers. Nadeem Khan announced that within the next few days, bottles would be distributed among policemen deployed in Clifton, Defence, Shahrah-e-Faisal, and gradually the campaign would be extended to other parts of the city.
In the meeting, the problems faced by traffic police were also discussed in detail and solutions were suggested. The meeting decided that additional measures would be taken to maintain the flow of traffic.
Korangi DSP Nawaz Chandio and SSP (East) Irum Awan were alsopresented with shields for their performance. Senator Haseeb Khan was also present at the meeting. The DIG (Traffic) presented the shield to Nadeem Khan on behalf of the police for playing a crucial role in maintaining law and order in the city.
Addressing the participants, he noted that encroachments alongside the roads in the city were the main cause of traffic jams and a big problem for the traffic police. He announced increasing deployment in the evening hours during Ramzan to maintain traffic flow. He asked the public to leave for their destination before Iftar so that they could reach there on time. “Leaving for destinations at the eleventh hour creates traffic problems, as everyone tries to reach in a hurry,” he noted.
He also called for the change of public attitude towards the policemen, as they “are considered inferior. Police are ready to perform their duties day and night. On public complaints, often police officials are suspended, but in many cases wrongdoings are witnessed from the citizens’ side,” he explained .
SM Munir, while assuring the full support of the business community, stressed the need to take extraordinary measures to keep the flow of traffic in Ramzan. “People should not hurt the self respect of the police,” he asserted.
Zubair Tufail appreciated the role of the FPCCI committee saying that by closer relations among police, public, and industrialists, the traffic problems could be minimised, apart from eliminating crimes from society.
