PESHAWAR: An appeal was filed on Wednesday in Peshawar High Court (PHC) challenging Haripur Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC)’s decision to exonerate 26 suspects in Mashal Khan lynching case.
Aimal Khan, brother of the 25-year-old student from Mardan’s Abdul Wali Khan University, filed an appeal in PHC demanding capital punishment for 26 exonerated suspects. The family member of Mashal said that conclusive evidence against the 26 individuals exists.
The appeal also demanded arrest and re-hearing of the case against the 26 acquitted suspects, adding that the 26 suspects can be seen in the video of Mashal’s lynching.
Haripur ATC hearing Mashal Khan murder case on February 7 pronounced 31 suspects guilty and sentenced 1 to death, 5 to 25 years in prison, 25 to 4 years in prison whereas remaining 26 acquitted.
Judge Fazal Subhan read the verdict that was reserved last month. All 57 suspects were present in the court amid tight security.
Mashal Khan, a Mass Communication student from Abdul Wali Khan University of Mardan, was brutally lynched to death after being shot by a charged mob that accused him of blasphemy. The police later submitted to the court that no evidence was found of the blasphemy allegation.
