KARACHI: The Sindh government has approved a raise in the stipend of nursing students following protests by nursing staff associations.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah approved a summary sent to his office by the provincial health department, raising the stipend of nursing students from Rs 6,860 to Rs 15,880 a month.
In February this year, Young Nurses Association (YNA) and Provincial Nurses Association (PNA) held hunger strike camps in the city to press for the acceptance of their demands.
One of these demands was increase in stipend of nursing students to Rs 20,000 a month. They had held that other provinces were paying the amount to nursing students and asked the Sindh administration to match that.
Following the round of protests, a meeting was held between health department representatives and leaders of nurses’ associations.
While KP government is paying Rs 20,000 a month in stipend to nursing staff students, Punjab pays Rs 15,880 a month and Balochistan Rs 10,000 a month.
