ISLAMABAD: The Sub-Committee of the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms on Monday discussed proposals received for the Elections Bill, 2017.
The sub-committee held its 78th meeting at the Parliament House, under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Law and Justice Zahid Hamid.
Talking to the media after the meeting, the chairman said that a total 630 proposals were received about Election Bill, 2017. “The meeting also discussed sections 13 to 41 which include electoral roles, delimitation and the annual report of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP),” he said.
He said that the committee had unanimously accepted all the proposals pertaining to the Elections Bill, 2017, whereas Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) would submit their proposals during the sub-committee’s meeting on April 11.
When asked about the introduction of electronic voting (E-Voting) system in the country, Zahid Hamid said that the electronic voting machines and biometric machines would be installed on trial basis during by-polls after June, 2017. “If this system proves to be a success, it will be introduced in the coming general elections,” he said.
He said that the decision to increase electoral seats would be taken after the completion of general census based upon population. However, he clarified that this would need proper legislation. Hamid said that the sub-committee was making all out efforts to complete its discussion in the 80th meeting after which a draft would be submitted before the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms.
Minister of State for Information Technology Anusha Rehman, MNAs Shireen Mazari, Naveed Qamar, Shazia Marri, Sahibzada, Tariqullah, Naeema Kishwar and Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Law and Justice Barrister Zafarullah attended the meeting.
ECP secretary and additional Secretary and IT DG were also present.
